I need some help with the French Horn.?
I am in 11th grade and have been playing the horn since 6th grade. Everyone tells me i am good at it, but i personally know that i am still at beginner/amateur level. Could i have some tips on how to get better?
Here are some extra questions.
-My lips get really weak after a little while playing and i am unable to play anymore. Why is this?
-Sometimes, my mouthpiece gets really slobbery and my mouth slides right off, is there a way to fix this?
-Finally, when i play for an extended period of time, air comes out of the side of my mouth and interferes with my playing. Why is this, and how do i fix it?
Like everything in life you get better by doing and doing it right. There is no sense in blasting away if you aren’t consciously thinking about your sound and making adjustments to perfect your sound. Playing through a piece chalked with errors only reinforces you to play that piece with errors. When clams occur, stop, analyze why you missed the note, devise routines to correct the problem and practice the part again perhaps at a slower tempo until you get it right.

Playing a brass instrument is demanding on your facial muscles. Just like when you exercise for long periods your muscles get tired and do not perform at the same intensity as they did when you started. To improve your endurance you should be practicing long tones every day.

Most everyone plays with a wet embouchure, but If my lips are too wet, I will wipe them off with my hand or a rag. Your mouthpiece shouldn’t get slobbery, unless air is escaping from the corners of your mouth while you play which could be related to your other questions.
